💢 Merz's message after the CDU's historic election defeats is less "change course" than "change how the course is delivered."

• The scale is openly acknowledged. Merz called Mecklenburg-Vorpommern a "deep rupture": the CDU fell below 5% and lost its entire parliamentary group. He also conceded that federal policy and his own leadership played a role.

• But responsibility is being broadened. Merz attributes the losses partly to polarization between the SPD and AfD and, more fundamentally, to a transformation of Germany's party system. In other words, the diagnosis extends beyond Merz personally.

• No retreat from the coalition or reform agenda. The CDU intends to continue governing with the SPD. Merz said no personnel question had even been raised inside the party leadership. Reform continues, though its priorities and presentation will be reviewed.

• The more consequential admission concerns the CDU itself. Merz said the party has "no satisfactory answers" to too many questions and conceded that it functions as a Volkspartei only "in parts" of Germany and society. Party structure, program and political profile are now all up for review.

• The strategic red line remains Germany's Western alignment. Merz described the country's integration into the Western alliance as normative, not merely geographical, invoked Adenauer's break with nationalism, and framed preserving Germany's EU orientation as a historic task of the CDU.

• On economics, Berlin's result is already producing federal policy. Merz said draft legislation is being prepared to prevent expropriation of private property, explicitly describing it as a signal to international investors after Die Linke's housing campaign.

• The potentially deeper domestic shift is on "fairness." Merz singled out the divide between statutory and private health and care insurance as a serious problem in public perceptions of justice and said the government would have to address it.
