💢 Polish lawmakers are accusing Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government of staging a coup d'état. They allege that forces acting on behalf of his government unlawfully entered the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw and obstructed legally appointed judges from accessing the building.
Police were deployed to the tribunal grounds, while its deputy president, Bartłomiej Sochański, was blocked at the gates. An announcement appeared on the court's website suspending its president and deputy, prompting the tribunal's official X account to denounce an illegal takeover and accuse those involved of a "coup d'état."
President Karol Nawrocki abruptly turned his plane around en route to Senegal and headed back to Warsaw.
The Constitutional Tribunal is Poland's highest constitutional court, responsible for determining whether legislation passed by parliament complies with the Constitution.
