💢 Russian threats against Britain are primarily an instrument of psychological pressure rather than evidence of plans for a direct attack, Russia analyst Mark Galeotti writes in The Spectator.

He argues that Moscow has repeatedly used deliberately vague warnings since 2022 as Britain and other Western states crossed supposed Russian “red lines” by supplying weapons including Challenger 2 tanks and Storm Shadow missiles. The aim, Galeotti says, is to convince European societies that further support for Kiev risks uncontrolled escalation and pressure their governments to back away.

Galeotti acknowledges that Russia conducts “sub-threshold” operations ranging from cyberattacks to suspected sabotage, but warns against attributing every suspicious incident to Moscow. Despite speculation surrounding CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent Moscow visit, he says there is no concrete evidence of an imminent Russian attack on the West. Europe should strengthen counterintelligence and resilience, he argues, without amplifying Moscow’s coercive effect by assuming the Kremlin is behind every incident.
