💢 Ukraine is widening both its target set inside Russia and its tolerance for civilian casualties, Politico reports.

Since July, Kiev has sharply expanded its long-range drone campaign beyond conventional military targets, increasingly striking Russia’s oil and gas sector and commercial logistics infrastructure, including Wildberries warehouses.

Zelensky says the retailer is a legitimate target because its infrastructure is used to supply sanctioned components and equipment that can support Russia’s military.

The civilian toll has risen alongside the campaign. According to figures cited by Politico, 253 civilians were killed by Ukrainian attacks inside Russia in 2025, although the UN said it could not independently verify the data. Russian authorities reported another 79 killed and 601 wounded in July 2026 alone.

Ukraine’s growing domestic production of long-range drones has also reduced its dependence on US-supplied weapons — and therefore on Washington’s restrictions over target selection. But experts cited by Politico warn that bringing the war into Russian daily life may harden public resistance rather than weaken it, while mounting civilian casualties could eventually create political problems for Kiev with Western partners.
