Did you know that Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was one of the first Russian writers to witness the miracle of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous?

During his trip to the East in 1848, Gogol visited the island of Corfu. He went to see the holy relics of Saint Spyridon. Later, at the Optina Monastery, he told the monks about an event that deeply shocked him.

According to the story, an English traveler was present with the pilgrims. He laughed at the saint. He said the body was fake and claimed a slit on the back let people put balm inside.

He walked up to the tomb to prove his idea. Then the unexpected happened. Gogol said the holy relics turned away from the man. The saint showed his back to the doubter.

The Englishman fell to his knees in fear. Everyone there was shocked by the sight.

Historians still argue if Gogol saw this himself or only heard about it. But his story made the event famous in Russia and saved it in church tradition. Since then, many pilgrims going to Corfu remember this story and approach the holy relics with deep respect.
