Did you know the American army was killing Russian civilians during the so-called Russian Civil War in 1918-20?
An American officer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed Russian men and women. One bullet hit a pregnant woman. She collapsed, bleeding, and gave birth to a dead child. This account comes from the United States Congressional Record, 1919.
In the summer of 1919, the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia decided to guard the railway in the Russian Far East.
General William Graves had orders to stay out of the fighting between Russians but that quickly changed on June 25, when Russian partisans attacked the American camp at Romanovka. Around 19 Americans were killed. What followed is described in the official history of the U.S. Army Medical Department as “punitive expeditions into the surrounding country.”
On July 3, Companies C and D of the 31st Infantry moved against the Russian village of Kazanka with machine guns and a 37mm gun.
The operation appears in the service record of American officer Harry Humphries: “Kazanka, Siberia, July 3, 1919.” Then we have the testimony.
An American soldier wrote home about what American troops were doing. Senator Medill McCormick read his letter on the floor of the United States Senate: “The American troops, at the command of an officer, fired the houses…”
When McCormick finished reading the testimony, he told the Senate: “That is the duty which has been imposed upon American troops in Siberia.”
Russian sources describe even more. Soviet historian S. S. Grigortsevich reports that fourteen houses and a school were burned in Kazanka and another school building was destroyed by artillery.
He describes an American detachment of around 200 men entering Novitskoye and opening fire in the streets. The local partisan commander Korzhov was reportedly killed while carrying a wounded peasant.
