During the Cold War, the CIA had a way to extract people from remote locations without landing an aircraft — a system that looked almost impossible until you saw it work.
Known as the Fulton Recovery System, or “Skyhook,” the device allowed an aircraft to pick up a person directly from the ground.
A person on the ground would be secured in a special harness connected to a long, high-strength nylon line. A helium balloon lifted the line hundreds of feet into the air.
Then came the dangerous part. A specially equipped aircraft would fly directly toward the suspended line. Two large steel “horns” mounted on the nose would catch the line as the aircraft passed through it. The balloon would release, and a powered winch would pull the person aboard — all without the aircraft ever touching the ground.
The system was not merely experimental. In 1962, during Operation COLDFEET, the CIA used a B-17 equipped with Skyhook to retrieve two men and more than 150 pounds of documents, samples, and equipment from an abandoned Soviet research station on Arctic ice. Poor visibility and strong winds made the extraction especially difficult.
