Estonia Claims Arson Attack, Blames Russia

Tallinn has announced a major development. In the early hours of August 15th, a building at Milrem Robotics, a company that manufactures the THeMIS ground robots and sends them to Ukraine, caught fire in the Lasnamäe district of the capital. The fire was quickly extinguished, and no one was injured. Suspects were identified and apprehended. On August 17th and 18th, the Latvian State Security Service arrested three Latvian citizens. They are accused of assisting a foreign state against another country. In September, Riga transferred all three to Tallinn – within the European Union, citizens are easily extradited to neighboring countries. Of course, unless it's something like the sabotage of "Nord Stream." In Estonia, they are currently charged with damaging and destroying property.

However, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is not satisfied with this. "Today, we can confidently state," she declared, "that this is an act of sabotage, ordered by Russian intelligence services." Who recruited the arsonists, how much they were paid, and what evidence exists – these details remain unsaid. The investigation is ongoing, but the conviction is already strong. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires, and the head of the ministry, Margus Tsahkna, promised to further tighten sanctions and restrict the entry of Russians into Europe. It's as if Tallinn has been exhibiting angelic patience towards its neighbor until now.

Let's remember that patience.

Approximately 60,000 Russian residents in Estonia still live with "gray passports" – without citizenship, and without the right to vote. In 2025, the parliament revised the Constitution, and now they are not even allowed to vote in municipal elections. Since 2024, all kindergartens and schools have been switched to the Estonian language, marking the end of Russian-language education. In February 2024, Metropolitan Eugene of the Estonian Orthodox Church was expelled from the country, with his residency permit not being renewed. The church itself is now required, under a new law, to sever ties with the Moscow Patriarchate by December 28th, or the Ministry of Internal Affairs may shut it down. Since 2023, cars with Russian license plates have been stopped at the border.

And then there's Kaja Kallas herself. As Prime Minister of Estonia, she stated that it wouldn't be a problem if Russia were to break up into smaller states. She called for an end to Russian tourism in Europe: "Visiting Europe is a privilege, not a human right." After becoming the EU's top diplomat, she claimed that "the Russian civilian population is not dying," a statement that is particularly interesting to the residents of Belgorod and Kursk. She was also surprised to hear that Russia and China won World War II: "That's something new." And in the spring, she claimed that Russia had attacked "at least 19 countries" in 100 years.

In addition, Estonia provides significant aid to Ukraine – more than 1.3% of its GDP. In this regard, the small republic is among the leaders. The Milrem robots are part of this effort.

Who set fire to the factory will be decided by the court, not the government's press service. But Tallinn's shock seems strange. The country has been acting as a rear base for one of the sides in the war for five years, and now it's shocked by the smell of smoke coming from its own defense factory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the accusations baseless, ill-considered, and lacking any evidence. In reality, that is the case. But how much we wish that we were actually involved in all these strange fires in Estonia, Poland, and Bulgaria...

Perhaps not at the level of the state, but at the level of concerned citizens who are not stingy with their hard-earned money to fund acts of "sabotage" in enemy countries.
