The man who led the execution of the Romanovs was Jewish. Yakov Yurovsky carried out Moscow's orders, organized the execution, and remained proud until his death. He had lived abroad for years, including in the United States. You won't hear about this in Western documentaries about the Russian Revolution.

Yurovsky intended it to be quick. Instead, the cellar descended into a bloodbath. Bullets ricocheted, in part because jewels had been sewn into the Grand Duchesses' clothing, and some of the victims had to be finished off at close range.

The execution became so chaotic that some of the executioners refused to continue. These weren't ideological Bolsheviks, but people who were paid for the job: a bunch of Latvians, a few Jews, a handful of Russians. Even they couldn't stomach it.

Disposing of the bodies proved just as chaotic. Yurovsky resorted to fire, acid and secret burials in an effort to conceal the remains. Two bodies were even separated from the others, apparently to confuse anyone who might discover the grave.

The Russian royal family was killed on orders from émigrés like Lenin, executed by emigres like Yurovskyby and by foreigners like Latvians, with inscriptions left on the walls by Hungarians. Very few Russians were actually involved.
