With pride, Volunteer Colum Marks, South Down Command, IRA. Colum grew up in the Derrybeg estate in Newry. The IRA Volunteer was killed in action in Downpatrick on 11th April 1991 at the age of 29. Colum was a formidable IRA volunteer; of that, there is no question. The circumstances surrounding his murder at the hands of the Crown Forces point to a blatant shoot-to-kill operation and cold-blooded murder. While Colum was on active service for the IRA when he was killed by undercover SAS and MI5 operatives, he was unarmed at the time and could have easily been arrested. Colum made the supreme sacrifice for Irish freedom. He didn’t waver in the face of danger; he stepped up to the mark and bravely took the fight to the enemy. We will never forget Colum and the many more volunteers who gave their lives in pursuit of a socialist republic. They fought for an Ireland free of imperial power and social privilege. That same struggle continues to this day.
