And here is where the story gets even stranger.

The Kremlin informed Poland about the discovery, but the Polish side kept the response remarkably discreet. Only the Polish president’s wife came to lay flowers. The Polish side did not accept the proposal for a joint exhumation. Instead of a full exhumation, the grave was later covered with concrete and remained behind a fence. Weird, right?

So why does this particular grave matter so much?

Because unlike the graves investigated in 1943 and later, this one had reportedly remained untouched. An undisturbed grave could preserve evidence capable of dating the burials: newspapers, letters, tickets, coins, documents, or other objects.

If a proper excavation established that the bodies were buried in 1941, after the Germans occupied the Smolensk region, the implications would be enormous. It would directly challenge the established chronology of the Katyn executions.

And that would not be some minor historical correction. Katyn became one of the central pillars of Poland’s twentieth-century historical narrative.

Perhaps that is exactly why the ninth grave deserves a proper excavation rather than concrete poured over it.
