Following an interview Israel’s Defense Minister gave to Channel 14, the picture is now much clearer:
The IDF will continue its operations in southern Lebanon. Unlike the previous arrangement, under which the United States pressured Israel to refrain from striking Beirut, the new understanding is straightforward: as long as Hezbollah does not fire on Israeli towns and villages, Beirut will not be targeted. But the moment Hezbollah opens fire, Israel will strike Beirut.
The bottom line is this: Hezbollah has effectively agreed to stop firing at Israel without securing an Israeli withdrawal from a single square inch of Lebanese territory.
We are there to stay and to continue clearing the area until Hezbollah is disarmed - a process that could take months, and perhaps even years.
