IS THE BIBLE ACCURATE, RELIABLE, AND AUTHENTIC?

Some claim that the Bible was changed, corrupted, or rewritten over the centuries.

The evidence says otherwise.

The Bible was not passed down through a single, fragile chain of copies. Thousands of manuscripts discovered across different countries, centuries, and languages allow us to examine how faithfully its text was preserved.

THE OLD TESTAMENT

The Dead Sea Scrolls include biblical manuscripts dating from approximately the third century BC to the first century AD.

Among them is the Great Isaiah Scroll - a complete copy of Isaiah dating from around 125 BC. It allowed scholars to compare the book with Hebrew manuscripts produced more than a thousand years later.

Despite textual variations, the comparison revealed remarkable continuity with the traditional Hebrew text.

The Septuagint - the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures - and other textual witnesses provide additional evidence of the antiquity and preservation of the Old Testament.

THE NEW TESTAMENT

By the abundance of its manuscript evidence, the New Testament is the best-attested body of literature from the ancient Greco-Roman world.

Nearly 5,800 Greek New Testament manuscripts have been catalogued. Thousands more preserve ancient translations in Latin, Syriac, Coptic, and other languages.

The early church fathers also quoted the New Testament tens of thousands of times.

These witnesses came from different places, languages, and centuries. By comparing them, scholars can identify copying variations and establish the earliest recoverable text with remarkable confidence.

Are all the handwritten copies identical?

No - and no serious scholar claims they are.

But the abundance of manuscripts means that differences cannot be hidden. They can be identified, compared, and carefully evaluated. The overwhelming majority are minor copying differences that do not change the message of Scripture.

The Bible is not a collection of legends that appeared centuries after the events it describes. Its writings are rooted in real people, real places, and real history.

Manuscripts confirm its preservation. Archaeology illuminates its historical setting. Fulfilled prophecy reveals the One who stands behind it all.

Many rulers tried to suppress the Scriptures. Kingdoms rose and fell. Empires disappeared. Critics came and went.

Yet God’s Word remains.
