People have been writing to me throughout my travels to Dubai, New Zealand, and Australia, asking why we don’t charge a speaking fee or ask the churches that invite us to cover our travel expenses.

Some have rightly pointed to verses such as:

“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.”
1 Corinthians 9:9

And:

“The laborer is worthy of his wages.”
Luke 10:7

These are absolutely legitimate biblical principles.

However, we have always believed that once you put a price tag on ministry, or require smaller churches to shoulder significant travel expenses, something can slowly begin to happen: eventually, you find yourself going only where people can afford to bring you.

That is not how we want to operate.

Our philosophy has always been simple: we rely on the leading of the Holy Spirit concerning where we should go, and we trust God to put it on the hearts of His people to provide what is needed for us to get there.

But then some of you wrote something that made me think:

“If you never ask, people may simply assume you don’t need.”

So let me say clearly what I thought was already understood:

Our ministry tours cost money. Flights, hotels, transportation, equipment, and all the logistics involved in taking Bible teaching around the world come with very real expenses. And yes, we gratefully welcome donations toward those costs.

What we will not do is place that burden on the church that invites us.

We want to remain free to go wherever the Holy Spirit leads us - whether it is a large church with significant resources or a small congregation that could never afford to bring us otherwise.

The need is there. We simply believe it should not fall on the shoulders of the one who invites us, but rather be met by those whom the Holy Spirit leads to give once they are made aware of that need.

That way, no church is too small, no destination is too far, and money never gets to decide where we preach the Word of God.

We go where He leads.

And we trust Him to provide.
