Summer is over. The full calendars are back, the groups are meeting again, and if you lead a small group or a Bible study, you are probably deciding right now what you are going to teach this fall.
Let me make a suggestion. Teach Elijah.
I say that for two reasons. First, because you cannot understand the ministry of Jesus without him. The transfiguration, the questions about John the Baptist, the expectation of the Jewish people, all of it runs through Elijah. Study him and you will read the Gospels differently.
Second, because his story is not ancient history. It is a description of what you and I are watching unfold right now. A compromised nation, a bold false religion, a throne that answers to a foreign queen, and a prophet standing almost alone in the middle of it.
I said “almost”. And that word matters.
In 1 Kings 19:10 Elijah said: "I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
He was wrong. God answered him in verse 18: "Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal."
Elijah was not alone. He just couldn’t see the others from the cave in which he was hiding. And this is exactly why I want you to study this prophet’s life together and not by yourself. Reading alone is wonderful. But there is something God does in a room full of believers that He does not do in a room with just one. You discover the seven thousand.
If you are looking for teaching material to go with the study of this man’s life, I would like to recommend my new book, The Elijah Mandate. Get a copy into the hands of every person in your group and walk through it together this fall. It will bless them, and it will keep all of you moving in the same direction through territory most believers have never seriously explored.
Order at Christianbook or any of your favorite bookstores, and get your group rooted in one of the most pivotal stories in the Old Testament.
