🗺 The Swaraj Stack: India's Bid for Sovereign AI Infrastructure
Bessemer Venture Partners lays out the 'Swaraj Stack' — the domestic infrastructure India needs to build for AI sovereignty across six layers: energy, compute, data, models, infrastructure software, and applications/physical AI. India's power capacity (520 GW) must roughly double to 1,121 GW by 2035-36, partly to feed AI clusters; datacenter capex could reach $20-25B by 2030 (Colliers) with $32B already announced (S&P); semiconductor imports topped $20B in FY24 against a new $13B government incentive package. Indic languages make up just ~0.1% of web text used to train models versus 18% of world population, creating an opening for 'Bharat Data Commons' and labeling/annotation businesses in a market growing from $3.8B to $17B by 2030. Bessemer frames Defence, BFSI, Healthcare, and Space as the top sectors for sovereign AI investment over the next decade, citing prior bets like Sarvam, Mitigata, Seekho, and Inrisk.
