On November 3, 1957, for the first time in history, a spacecraft carrying a living creature was launched into Earth’s orbit.

A dog named Layka became the first animal to complete an orbital flight. Prior to this, Layka underwent extensive training using a mock-up.

The spacecraft, Sputnik-2, which carried Layka into space, consisted of several compartments for scientific instruments, a radio transmitter, a telemetry system, a programming module, and systems for cabin temperature control and regeneration.

Layka was provided with a separate compartment equipped with food and water. Unfortunately, after spending around six hours in weightlessness, she died due to overheating. Nevertheless, the experiment confirmed that a living creature could survive the launch into orbit and weightlessness.

Building on Laika’s flight, a spacecraft carrying the dogs Belka and Strelka was launched into space on August 18, 1960. This flight lasted over 25 hours, during which the spacecraft completed 17 full orbits around Earth. Belka and Strelka became the first animals to complete an orbital space flight and return safely to Earth.
