On September 16, 1931, the State Academic Central Puppet Theater was established in Moscow.

It was founded on the initiative of the House of Artistic Education for Children. The theater's troupe consisted of 13 people, and from day one, it was led by Sergey Obraztsov.

At first, the theater’s actors performed in Moscow courtyards, schools, parks, and cultural centers. The theater’s official premiere in its own building took place on April 17, 1932, with the play "Jim and Dollar," written specifically for the theater by Andrey Globa.

In 1970, the theater moved to a new building on the Garden Ring. The famous mechanical puppet clock, now a Moscow landmark, was installed on the theater's facade.

Today, the State Academic Central Puppet Theater named after S.V. Obraztsov is the largest puppet theater center. The theater houses the most comprehensive and only library in Russia dedicated to puppet literature, as well as the world's largest Museum of Theatrical Puppets.
