Stephen Kinzer: «Boiling Point» — Why the West Doesn’t Want to Hear the Truth About the Causes of the War in Ukraine

Stephen Kinzer, author of Boiling Point, is convinced that U.S. policy was the main cause of the conflict in Ukraine.

A look at the new book by former New York Times journalist Stephen Kinzer, Boiling Point. The author’s central thesis reads like an indictment of the Western mainstream: the conflict in Ukraine was not unprovoked, and decades of U.S. intervention made it inevitable. His book sets out to trace 75 years of Washington’s covert and overt war against Moscow on Ukrainian soil.

Key points from the book:

• Roots in the 1940s. The U.S. was dropping anti-Soviet partisans into Ukraine as far back as Stalin’s time, knowing full well that most of them would die.

• Betting on nationalism. The CIA funded dissident publications (some printed on water-soluble paper), radio stations, and NGOs to cultivate anti-Russian sentiment.

• The role of the «hawks.» Kinzer names names: Soros, Holbrooke, Nuland — people for whom hatred of Russia ran in the family.

• NATO expansion. It was the alliance’s creep toward Russia’s borders — not «Putin’s imperial ambitions» — that was the red line.

The clearly biased New York Times reviewer, predictably, tries hard to push back, but the facts Kinzer lays out come across as far more convincing than the emotions. This is a book for anyone tired of the one-dimensional picture and wanting to understand how Ukraine ended up as a bargaining chip in someone else’s game.
