🪙 What should we expect from .gram domains?

⚫️ Yesterday, Pavel Durov said that Telegram had applied for the .gram top-level domain. If ICANN approves the application, Telegram users could eventually get their own domains — for example, @durov could become durov.gram, while we could get thedailyton.gram.

⚫️ The news got a mixed reaction across TON. Why does the ecosystem need another set of regular web domains when TON DNS already exists, and usernames bought on Fragment can already double as wallet addresses and even be used for TON Sites?

⚫️ TOP CEO Andrey Rogozov added some useful context. According to him, .ton domains will remain aliases for TON addresses, while .gram is meant to be a proper web domain with ownership secured through TON. That would likely mean tokenizing .gram domains as NFTs and turning them into another digital asset on Fragment.

⚫️ Still, let’s be honest: for anyone outside the ecosystem, keeping track of this growing domain-name zoo is going to be a challenge. The blockchain is still called TON, its native coin is now Gram, .ton and t.me domains already exist, regular .gram domains may be coming, and the ecosystem already has a separate Web3 collection of .gram domains. Good luck to the next generation of users trying to make sense of all that.

⚫️ Durov also suggested that personal .gram websites could be generated from a prompt — presumably through Cocoon — and hosted on Telegram’s servers. So it is still unclear whether .gram domains will work like regular domains that you can point to your own website, or whether they will be limited to simple AI-generated profile pages.

⚫️ Either way, we are still a long way from typing thedailyton.gram into a browser. ICANN’s application window only closed on August 12, and applications still have to go through evaluation, possible contention between companies applying for the same TLD, and the rest of the approval process. So even if Telegram’s bid succeeds, a .gram launch before 2028 looks unlikely.
