A state coup and seizure of the Constitutional Tribunal have begun in Poland. Police have blocked the building of the Polish court after the dismissal of its chairman.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki turned his plane around, which was en route to Senegal, stating on X that "at such a moment, the president must be in Poland."
On its website, the Constitutional Tribunal announced that its chairman, Bogdan Święczkowski, was dismissed on Friday.
The agency notes that the prolonged political dispute surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal has effectively paralyzed the institution's operations.
Previously, Nawrocki, supported by the nationalist party "Law and Justice" (PiS), which lost its parliamentary majority in 2023, refused to swear in three out of six judges nominated by parliament. In turn, Święczkowski refused to allow judges elected by the current parliamentary majority to assume their duties.
In September, the Polish parliament voted to appoint former cabinet member Maciej Berec, known as the right-hand man of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Critics, including those within Tusk's coalition, stated that this move undermined the government's claims of restoring a system of checks and balances.
