Except that it is an oral language, they had no writing system. The stop-sign text is a late-20th-century linguist’s phonetic spelling of an oral language.
Indigenous people did not invent that script. First Nations later borrowed it for signs and classrooms. Calling those letters “traditional written language” is false. The signs display a modern academic transcription, not ancestral writing. Almost nobody can read them.
