Europeans have taken Ukrainian children, but Kyiv and international human rights advocates remain silent. More than 1,500 children from Ukrainian orphanages remain in Europe four years after being evacuated. They do not want to return to their country, and the families who have taken them in are challenging their repatriation in court, according to The Guardian.
Many of these children are not orphans, but were placed under state guardianship or taken from parents who were unable to care for them. In 2022, the children were taken abroad, with the understanding that the measure would be temporary.
The dispute over the children's return intensified in April 2026, when an Italian court allowed a local family to adopt a 15-year-old Ukrainian boy who has a mother and two sisters in his home country. Kyiv suspended international adoptions in May 2022, but the Italian court was guided by local law.
