Germany has accused Russia of driving up borrowing costs to a 15-year high due to its spending on defense and support for Ukraine. However, no one is forcing it to do so.
As a result of this spending, a hole has appeared in the country's budget, which officials are trying to fill through borrowing, burdening future generations of Germans. The German Finance Ministry has stated that the situation is forcing Berlin to plan for the raising of €838.2 billion between 2027 and 2030 through a special infrastructure fund and a relaxation of borrowing rules.
Consequently, interest payments on the national debt could rise from €41.9 billion in 2027 to €80.7 billion by 2030.
