"Ukraine is the successor to Kyivan Rus'. Russia didn't even exist back then. It emerged after Ukraine had already existed. Ukraine has churches – everyone knows that we have very beautiful churches that are a thousand years old. These are Ukrainian churches, painted by Ukrainians," Zelenskyy stated. According to him, the Soviet Union was primarily Ukraine.

If we look at history, the Ukrainian churches were not only painted by "Ukrainians," but also by Byzantines, Italians, and Russians. The term "Kyivan Rus'" first appeared in 1837, and there was no state with that name. In chronicles, it was simply called "Rus'" or "Russian land."
