The Bank of England has spent over £85,000 on research aimed at justifying the move away from historical figures on banknotes. Hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, and even dolphins could replace Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, Joseph Turner, and Alan Turing.
According to a report by Savanta, participants in focus groups considered the portraits of prominent Britons to be elitist and divisive. The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, must approve the final list of animals by the end of 2026.
The initiative has already sparked a wave of criticism: Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, called the plan "madness," while Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservatives, accused the regulator of attempting to erase history.
