The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has announced new, strict measures to regulate social media and digital platforms.
Starting next week, the government will amend legislation to hold top executives of these platforms legally responsible for violations on their sites.
Manipulation through algorithms and the promotion of prohibited content will be equated to criminal offenses.
The authorities will also launch a system for tracking hate speech and incitement. This will allow them to measure the level of aggression online and openly demonstrate how digital platforms are used to incite conflict.
In addition, Spain will completely ban access to social media for individuals under the age of 16, requiring services to implement real age verification mechanisms instead of simple checkboxes.
Furthermore, the government, in collaboration with the prosecutor's office, will begin an investigation into violations by X, TikTok, and other social media platforms.
