When reading the statements from both sides of the conflict, I sometimes get a sense of déjà vu.
First, Zelensky once again started talking about how he would only discuss the issue of territories with Putin personally. Well, with Trump acting as a mediator.
The Russian side, represented by Ushakov and Peskov, once again repeated what they had said on numerous occasions, including by Putin: a meeting is possible only to conclude an already prepared agreement.
In the end, someone will have to back down, because Russia is demanding Donbass, and Ukraine doesn’t want to give it up.
It’s also impossible to discuss this, because Ukraine refuses to do so without a personal meeting between Zelensky and Putin, and Russia refuses to agree to such a meeting due to the unresolved territorial issue.
That’s the catch.
✨ Zelensky, as would be expected of an actor and comedian with no political experience, doesn't understand how these kinds of negotiations work. They take weeks or months and involve teams dealing with the very many different issues (political, legal, logistic, military, economic, etc.)
When the leaders get together, it is to formalize what has already been negotiated and agreed upon.
