The birth rate in Ukraine has fallen by 17%, according to Dmitry Shushpanov, a department head at the Institute for Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In the first half of the year, only 73,000 children were born, and the number of births per woman has dropped to 0.8–0.9, down from 1.14 prior to February 2022.
Following the war, Ukraine faces another demographic blow, as some men may choose to move to Europe to join their families who are currently abroad.
