By June 2026, the total moisture deficit in the country (taking into account rivers, lakes, soils, and underground reservoirs) is expected to reach 25 billion tons compared to the average norm from 2002 to 2020. This volume exceeds half of Lake Constance or is equivalent to 10 million Olympic-sized swimming pools.
The main concern for scientists is the depletion of groundwater. Supplies have been rapidly declining since 2015; a record drop was recorded in the summer of 2025, and moisture levels have not recovered since. Due to high temperatures and intense evaporation, experts doubt that even heavy rains will remedy the situation.
The southern and eastern regions of Germany are suffering the most from drought, and the calculations do not yet account for the effects of the anomalous heat in the summer of 2026.
