🇺🇦In 1991, around 600,000 children in Ukraine entered the first grade of what was still a Soviet school system

Today, 35 years later, only about 250,000 first-graders are starting school in Ukraine.

That is 350,000 fewer children—almost 60%. More than a twofold decline in a single generation.

Things will only get worse from here—much worse. Because today’s first-graders are children born before the war, when the demographic slump already existed but had not yet turned into a demographic abyss.

What is happening today is merely the beginning of the consequences of a demographic—and not only demographic—catastrophe that had been taking shape for decades.

The price of abandoning socialism and sinking into the “Third World” of peripheral capitalism and nationalism in pursuit of the unattainable myths of a “bright market-driven future” was depriving the country of any future at all.

Because a dying country—and, according to demographers, one that is already dying irreversibly—can hardly have a future in principle.
