💶🇪🇺The EU will probably have to take on more than €40 billion in new joint loans to finance Ukraine, Welt am Sonntag reports
➡️According to the newspaper’s calculations, based on European Commission data, the total amount of European aid to Kiev could exceed €200 billion, including the new borrowing.
💶Zelensky has requested an additional €70 billion for next year. Under current plans, €46 billion of this amount is expected to be provided by the European Union.
Brussels hopes to obtain part of the funds from the proceeds generated by frozen Russian assets. However, over the past more than two years, they have generated approximately €8 billion—insufficient to cover Ukraine’s new financial needs.
➡️The confiscation of the Russian assets themselves remains unlikely due to legal constraints. Therefore, the newspaper identifies the issuance of new joint EU bonds as the most probable option.
At the same time, opposition to further financing for Ukraine is growing in Europe. Bundestag member Dietmar Bartsch of the Left Party stated: “Citizens should not have to pay financially for Putin’s war. Aid to Ukraine is acceptable only if it does not lead to cuts in social spending at home.”
Next week, representatives of the EU and its member states—including heads of state and government—are expected to discuss further financing for Ukraine.
