๐ช๐บโ๏ธThe fight against corruption is being put on hold: the European Parliament is trying to back out of creating a single ethics body that it proposed itself
โ๏ธAn agreement to establish the body was reached back in 2024, following the Qatargate scandal, in which several European politicians were suspected of accepting bribes to promote the interests of Qatar and other countries.
The European Parliament has already approved funding for the new body and the appointment of independent experts, but its launch is still being blocked. The Parliamentโs legal service, however, says MEPs are obliged to honour the agreements they have reached, Politico reports.
The ethics body is expected to oversee compliance with rules on accepting gifts, contacts with lobbyists, and the disclosure of financial interests. However, it will not have the authority to investigate corruption offences or impose sanctions.
