๐NATO is revising its plans for war with Russia in connection with the possible withdrawal of American troops from Europe, Politico reports.
๐The US Department of Defense has already excluded some aircraft, drones, submarines and ships from the forces available to the alliance.
๐Now NATO must determine how to replace American weapons and how to prepare for a possible conflict with Russia by 2029.
๐Politico identifies five key problems related to the new military planning:
๐ Reserves:
NATO had previously planned to have an additional 18 brigades of about 5,000 troops each, but now their number may be reduced, or these formations may be eliminated altogether.
๐ Dependence on the US:
Without US support, the alliance will face a shortage of tanker aircraft, long-range missiles, heavy transport aircraft and intelligence assets.
๐Priority areas:
Allies are arguing about what to focus on: the Arctic or threats on the southern and southeastern flanks, including the Black Sea.
๐Drones or traditional weapons:
European armies need to determine the balance between drones, tanks and artillery, given the shortage of personnel.
๐ Combat experience in Ukraine:
๐NATO is studying it, but its own doctrine assumes rapid maneuvers, air superiority and high-precision long-range strikes.
๐
"Previously, when something was found to be lacking, the US filled those gaps. Now that no longer works," said former senior NATO official Camille Grand.
๐According to Politico, European countries will also have to significantly increase military production to match the scale of arms production in Russia.
