The Nitter project repository, which developed a free (GPLv3) frontend for accessing X.com without imposing JavaScript, analytics, trackers, or third-party services, has been reactivated. Nitter's author has so far stated that the project has been reactivated after consultation with legal counsel. The creators of XCancel published a similar announcement. Both are going to reveal more details later.
Nitter and XCancel were shut down two weeks ago after receiving a cease and desist notice from X Corp, or risk legal action. The notice alleged that the services violated state-specific and federal U.S. laws, including the Texas Malicious Computer Access Act (ยงยง 143.001 and ยง 33.02) and the Lanham Trademark Act (15 U.S.C. ยงยง 1114, 1125). The Nitter and XCancel developers were accused of illegally accessing X.com APIs and related data, as well as accessing X accounts and session tokens in violation of the service's terms of service.
