Ansar Allah has pushed to within 80 km of Aden, the main stronghold of Yemen's Saudi-controlled puppet government, four military sources told Reuters. That's the closest it has been since the early months of the war in 2015, when it briefly entered the city.
Its fighters have reportedly taken the entire Al-Maqatirah district in Lahj province, and on Monday were battling government forces at a military camp at the entrance to Tur al-Bahah district, one of the main approaches to Aden.
The sources say the advance gives Ansar Allah a chance to outflank government forces on the mountain range overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It also threatens the main road between Aden and Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, encircled since early October.
