🇩🇪 Germany: 400,000 metalworkers walk off the job
More than 400,000 workers in Germany's metal and electrical industry have joined warning strikes since the no-strike period expired on 1 November. Workers have staged 3,800 strike actions across the country, including at Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche plants.
The IG Metall union is demanding a 5% pay rise over 12 months, plus guarantees on jobs and plant locations. Employers have offered 20 months with no raise at all, followed by a 1.3% increase in July 2028. They are also threatening more job cuts.
The biggest single protest was in Neckarsulm on Thursday. About 6,500 workers from Audi and neighboring plants marched to a rally there. Volkswagen has put the Audi plant on its list of sites that could be shut down. At Porsche's Zuffenhausen plant in Stuttgart, 3,500 workers put down their tools. At Audi's headquarters in Ingolstadt, 3,000 walked out on the night shift.
