🇬🇷 Greece joins Europe's wave of unrest
Thousands of students and teachers took to the streets across Greece on Wednesday, following protests in France, Belgium, Italy, Albania, Portugal and Spain.
Rallies were held in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and other cities. Police put the Athens crowd at between 5,000 and 10,000. Protesters gathered outside parliament chanting "From Greece to France, we want public, free education," after students staged an overnight sit-in nearby.
The main demand is more state funding for education, along with better school facilities and smaller classes. Teachers walked out over low pay and staff shortages. Unions say Greece is short 15,000 secondary school teachers. Rising living and housing costs are also driving people onto the streets.
