🇩🇪 Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" in Bavaria largely destroyed by fire, arson suspected

The Kehlsteinhaus, the Alpine retreat built for the Nazi leadership near Berchtesgaden, went up in flames on Friday evening. Police were alerted at around 9:15 p.m., and the building was already fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Around 200 firefighters and emergency workers battled the blaze, but access was hampered by the site's location at 1,834 meters.

According to German media, the building is practically destroyed. No one was reportedly inside at the time.

Police detained a suspect shortly after the fire broke out, close to the scene. The case is being treated as a criminal investigation, but investigators have not yet established whether the suspect was involved, and no motive has been given.

The Kehlsteinhaus was completed in 1938 as a guest house and meeting venue for Nazi officials, reportedly a 50th birthday gift for Hitler. He visited only occasionally; his main residence, the Berghof, stood nearby. After the war the building was preserved as a historical monument and has operated as a restaurant since 1952, owned by the state of Bavaria.
