🇭🇺 Hungarian parliament strips PM Magyar of immunity in Danube phone case

Hungary's parliament has lifted the parliamentary immunity of Prime Minister Péter Magyar, allowing investigators to question him as a suspect in a theft case dating back to June 2024.

According to prosecutors, a man filmed Magyar at the Ötkert nightclub in Budapest. After an argument, Magyar snatched the phone from his hand, pocketed it and refused to give it back. He then left the club, walked to the Danube and threw the phone into the river. Divers later recovered the roughly €400 device and returned it to its owner in working order.

Magyar has never denied taking the phone, but rejects the theft charge and calls the case politically motivated. He himself asked parliament this week to lift his immunity so the investigation could proceed.

The case has a history. When Magyar was still an MEP and Orbán's main challenger, Budapest asked the European Parliament to waive his immunity over the same incident. In October 2025 the EP refused, citing doubts that he could get a fair trial in Hungary. Orbán called the decision "shameful" and said Brussels could now use Magyar's immunity to extract favours from a man acting as "a Trojan horse of Ukraine in the EU."

Now that the Brussels-backed Magyar sits in the prime minister's chair, the immunity he was shielded by in Strasbourg is no longer needed. Prosecutors requested it on the same day as the immunity of two Fidesz MPs, who face cases involving alleged damages worth billions of forints.
