🇪🇺🇺🇦 Kallas: Kiev losing €60 million a day as Black Sea exports collapse
EU foreign policy embarrassment Kaka Khallas told the European Parliament that Russian strikes on Ukraine's export routes since mid-July are costing Kiev an estimated €60 million a day in lost export revenue.
She then gave the usual figures: Ukraine supplies 15% of global maize exports, 10% of wheat, 15 to 20% of barley and 50% of sunflower oil, with around 90% moving through the Black Sea.
The problem is that her numbers don't hold up.
The market shares are pre-war figures Kiev has been repeating since 2022. Ukraine's own agriculture ministry put its 2025/26 exports at about 6% of global wheat, 12% of maize and 4% of barley. Barley alone is off by four to five times. Sunflower oil exports dropped by a quarter last season.
She also left out why the ports are being hit. Russia's July strikes on Odessa followed Ukrainian attacks on Russian Black Sea shipping, and Kiev has since been striking grain terminals in Novorossiysk and tankers across the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
