The explosion occurred on Kolpinskoye Highway in the Slavyanka area. A married couple was in the vehicle.
The man, a Russian military officer holding the rank of lieutenant colonel, was killed on the spot. His wife suffered severe injuries and is now in intensive care.
The blast wave damaged several vehicles parked nearby.
Preliminary information indicates an improvised explosive device had been planted in the car.
