German Chancellor Friedrich Merz now says the war on Iran has already cost Europe more than €100 billion through higher energy prices. The conflict "cannot be solved militarily," and Germany wants it to end as soon as possible.
That's not what he said when the bombs started falling.
In June 2025, as Israel struck Iran, Merz told German TV:
"This is the dirty work Israel is doing for all of us." And: "The greatest respect that the Israeli army had the courage to do this."
