A 49-year-old Israeli-Ukrainian Hasid who was detained at the border and drafted into the Ukrainian military will now serve safely as a doctor in Odessa after the Jewish community intervened on his behalf.
Jonathan Karlinsky had traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah when Ukrainian authorities detained him after discovering he was subject to mobilization.
Southern Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi Avraham Wolff held meetings with senior Ukrainian military officials and, through Chabad’s network, succeeded in having Karlinsky’s assignment changed from a feared posting near Kharkov to a medical center in Odessa.
The Odessa Jewish community will also provide him with kosher food and access to a synagogue, mikvah and other services so he can maintain his ultra-Orthodox lifestyle.
