🇺🇦🛸🇷🇺 Russia's jet drones are rewriting the air war
For three years the story of battlefield innovation belonged to Ukraine. The new Geran-4 and Geran-5 jet-powered drones, now hitting Ukrainian cities week after week, tell a different story, the Financial Times reports.
The first Geran-1 was a reworked Iranian Shahed: a 20 kg warhead, a top speed of 185 km/h, crude guidance. The Geran-5, fielded in January, flies at up to 600 km/h, carries 90 kg and reaches 1,000 km. The Geran-4 keeps the old airframe in a cleaner aerodynamic shape; the Geran-5 is built closer to a cruise missile.
Speed is only part of it. The newer models carry thermal cameras, AI-assisted guidance, Russian anti-jamming antennas and Chinese modems for mesh radio links. "A Russian operator flies at 2-5 km, finds the target, locks it with the camera, and the Shahed strikes automatically," says Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine's defence ministry. Almost every jet drone now has such a camera.
The lesson is uncomfortable for Kyiv's backers: the assumption that Moscow copies but does not create no longer holds.
