What if a secret message could tell when someone is listening in?
DRDO says it has just tested exactly that. Its Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) platform ran on the live network of the test ranges at the Proof and Experimental Establishment, Chandipur in Odisha.
• It guards the real-time telemetry and data from artillery and armoured weapon trials
• The encryption keys travel as quantum signals, so any attempt to intercept them disturbs the signal and gets spotted
• Built by DRDO's microelectronics, computing and cyber security cluster with Bengaluru-based Taqbit Labs as production partner
• Free-space QKD is also being developed to secure links in tough terrain without optical fibre
Why it matters: future quantum computers could break today's encryption. QKD is one way to keep military data safe even then.
