India is considering ending the blanket legal protection enjoyed by social media platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube under Section 79 of the IT Act.
The proposal could make platforms more accountable for content their algorithms actively recommend, amplify and promote.
Platforms may no longer be able to claim they are merely passive intermediaries while their algorithms decide what millions of users see.
Deepfakes, harmful content and algorithmic amplification are also under scrutiny.
