China has stripped Gen. Zhao Zongqi, the former head of the PLA’s Western Theatre Command who led forces during the 2017 Doklam standoff and the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. While U.S. intelligence previously linked Zhao to authorizing the deadly Galwan operation to "teach India a lesson," Beijing has never confirmed the claim nor officially explained if his removal is directly tied to President Xi Jinping's ongoing military purge.
