IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode died by suicide after being caught using a phone during an exam, Uploading on ChatGPT and copying answers. The institute says he was counselled and assured that his academic career would not be affected.
His family has alleged caste discrimination, invoked the SC/ST Act and are demanding compensation under the act along with crime branch investigation; the allegations are under investigation.
But IIT Bombay has also seen other student suicides this year, including Naman Agarwal. Their deaths did not trigger the same caste-discrimination narrative.
Just because they were General Category (GC) students?
If caste is not established as the cause in those cases, why should it be presumed here before the investigation is complete?
A highly qualified and respected professor has now said he is leaving his job.
Will teachers and professors, from now on, feel free to teach, counsel, or will they start avoiding such interactions out of fear?
