💢 A Turkish newspaper landed itself in a criminal investigation after publishing a social-media graphic reading “Erdoğan Vefat Etti” — “Erdoğan has died” — creating the impression that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had died.

The report was actually an obituary for a local woman named Gülşen Erdoğan. The ambiguity was amplified by Turkish grammar: the phrase itself does not indicate gender, while the social-media graphic omitted the woman’s first name and displayed only the surname Erdoğan.

The Aydın Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation under Article 217/A of the Turkish Criminal Code for the “public dissemination of misleading information.”
